BC’s Kekuli Provincial Park

Kekuli Provincial Park is an awesome place to camp while RVing in the Okanagan.

A very convenient stop if you are doing a one way rental from either Vancouver, Calgary or across Canada.  The rates are only $30 a night (2016).  The large campground is located in central Okanagan on Hwy 97 off the Trans Canada hwy.  It is 4 ½ hours from Vancouver and 6 ½ hours from Calgary just 15 min outside Vernon, and 30 minutes outside Kelowna.

Kekuli provincial park is in a natural setting and offers a secluded camping experience while being very close to all the activities of the Okanagan.  There are hiking trails, a beach, a boat launch, and an adventure playground for smaller children.  It is on the central Okanagan highway, an easy place to camp or park the RV for a picnic and swim.

Located on Kalamalka Lake, which is known as a lake of different colors.  As summer progresses the lake changes color from cyan to indigo.  The color of the water is derived from light scattering, causing the precipitation of calcite (CaCO3).  There is both swimming and boating activities on this lake.

Almost all camp sites have a view of the lake.  Only four campsites have full RV services so be prepared for dry camping by having a full tank of water and a charged battery.  There are warm showers and flush toilets. The nature and hiking trails offer great views of the Okanagan valley and various bird species visit here.  While there in June I was fortunate enough to see several beautiful Tangerine birds. A family of marmots camps there, and the nature signs warn of snakes but I did not see any.

It is important to reserve campsites in the Okanagan early, especially provincial parks.  For a campsite in July thru August it is best to reserve in April or late March.  The only place to reserve a camping spot in BC’s provincial parks is Discover Camping.  The reservation process opens March 15 and campsites can be booked only three months ahead of your arrival date.
