What To Do In Whitehorse

A popular reason for visiting Whitehorse is to take a Northern Lights tour, but there is so much more the ‘Wilderness City’ has to offer. It may come as a surprise to visitors but the capital of the Yukon Territories has an abundant art scene, mostly focused on visual arts.

Outside in the City

Miles Canyon
Take the suspension bridge over the rushing river and find a trail to explore on the other side.

Yukon Wildlife Preserve

Park your RV at the entrance of the property and enter the reception building. Here you will be familiarized with the preserve. Try to visit around feeding times as then you will have better chances of seeing the animals. The animals here are caribou, Canadian Lynx, mountain goats, elk, Alaska Yukon moose, mule deer, muskoxen, arctic foxes, wood bison and thin-horn sheep. You can partake in a bus tour or walk a 5 km trail on foot.

Emerald Lake

Usually to see a glacier-fed emerald & turqoise coloured lake one must hike up a mountain. However, the pullout to see this lake is just on the side of the main road and it is big enough even for RV’s which makes seeing this natural beauty easy.

Attractions & Entertainment

Takhini Hot Springs
Natural Hot Springs that are directed into a pool. This is a commercial business. On the site there is also a café restaurant, and camping opportunities. If you want to make a day of it stop at Beans North, a local coffee roaster, on your way to the springs.

North End Gallery
Immerse yourself in local art such as paintings, carvings, pottery and jewellery. If you are looking for a special gift for someone, this is the place!

Whitehorse Fishway
Whitehorse was named such because of the huge rapids that used to be on the Yukon River. The rapids are not as fierce as they used to be due to a damn that has intercepted the river currents. The Fishway is a way of helping the fish bypass the damn. Visit the interpretative centre for the Fishway where there is an underwater window for viewing the salmon run.
